CalPERS Investment Committee Meeting
May 13, 2013, Sacramento
Caroline Kittrell – Chico – PERS Member
My name is Caroline Kittrell. And I am a social worker who's worked for Butte County up in Chico in Oroville for 20 years. I've worked with child protective services. I've worked with mental health and alcohol and drug services. I've worked with the perinatal substance abuse project and with youth and adults in our community. And I've worked for -- to help people.
And as a long-time investor in PERS, I'm concerned about the use of my money. And I'm also representing several friends who couldn't come today to speak because they're still working. And I'm now retired, so I have the luxury of coming to speak to you.
I just want to have you please take seriously our concerns about the well-being of the Palestinian people in Israel. The United Nations has said that this -- they're being treated -- how they're being treated is against international law.
And the settlements specifically are issues that our government has asked that Israel stop these illegal settlements, and Israel has refused to stop. So I'm asking that -- and we're asking that we move in ways that we have the power to do to use our economic influence to stop supporting my money, to stop supporting Caterpillar, Veolia, Elbit, because there are things that are happening that are unacceptable for human rights. These are human rights.
And CalPERS is supposed to be a socially responsible investment organization. And so I call you each, all of you, your hearts, your minds, your whole beings to please be with us on this issue.
