CalPERS Investment Committee Meeting
May 13, 2013, Sacramento
Maria Gonzalez – PERS member
My name is Maria Gonzalez. I am State employee for the last 18 years. Consequently, my retirement depends on the profitability of your investment. Nevertheless, profitability should not be in contradiction with the respect of human right. To profit from activities that are against our moral principles are wrong.
I am very distressed to learn that CalPERS has investment in the specific companies that profit from human rights violations in the occupied territories by Israel. I would like to ask CalPERS to consider human rights violations as a criterion to invest or not to invest. Human rights should not be in contradiction with our foreign policy. And I am very disagreed with some of the statements expressed a few minutes ago in that we shouldn't care about foreign policy.
Human rights should be our flag and our leadership in the way we act. And we have -- any other organization we have an impact in how people see us. And my call as just a normal State employee is to ask CalPERS to consider human rights violations as to profit or not to profit, and to do a good conscience investment.
